This week we are shining an Industry Spotlight on François Richard, CEO of Lanéva.
The vision and drive this man has is exactly what we need to change the yachting industry!
What is your background and how did you develop the skills to direct a company?
I graduated with a bachelor in Political Science from Sorbonne University in Paris and a MA in International Studies and Diplomacy from SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London. I also had the chance to roam and travel before embarking on this adventure.
With experiences at the United Nations in London then New York, in consulting in Paris and finally as a shipbroker in Hamburg, I am a fervent advocate of the acquisition of knowledge through real experience. Skills are acquired by being passionate about your project, always looking for the optimal solution (sometimes late at night) and very often by collaborating with different profiles in their experiences and ways of thinking.
How does Lanéva set itself apart from other companies?
We designed a true and entire luxury & eco-friendly dayboat, from electric propulsion to recycling through noble and sustainable materials. This stands in our DNA and drive our ambition to be an actor in the future of the industry. This boat is part of a real experience we offer to our customers. We insist that they take part directly in the design of their boat which will be in their image and dedicated to their use. We remain at their side throughout their entire Lanéva lifestyle experience.
What has been your biggest success to date?
First, we are proud to have launched our first prototype in March 2019 on lake Como and inaugurated her in April 2019 at the Monaco Yacht Club with H.S.H Prince Albert II. In addition, for our first season, we managed to welcome more than 300 people aboard, collaborate with the Principality’s biggest events and build a reliable reputation in our target markets.
We look forward to being in 2020 for the rest of the adventure.
What has been your biggest challenge?
One of our biggest challenges is and remain to establish our reputation in a competitive but at the same time fragmented market. Offering the market a boat that stands out for its design, the choice of materials and a very efficient propulsion system is a permanent challenge but the main motivation for the creation of Lanéva.
We clearly benefit from multiple developments in the car industry and the best is to come on the water !
What are Lanéva’s projects which you are excited about that will potentially revolutionize the industry?
We are currently working on many topics in parallel. Our main goal is to become the leading integrator of electric propulsion for dayboat. Together with the right energy sources, we can combine the best technologies from the market to ensure an unforgettable boat experience, whether on lakes or at sea.
Where do you see the yachting industry heading in the future and what action would you like to see taken by other companies?
The yachting industry has no choice but to be greener and greener. However, let’s be realistic, we are not going to see superyachts only running on a 100% electric propulsion system tomorrow. In fact, we are convinced that the superyacht tender segment is the first piece of the superyacht puzzle that will be disrupted.
A 100% electric and versatile tender directly recharged on the power generation system of the mother ship is possible today.
And we know how to do it.
Which skills and attributes do you look for in candidates wanting to join your company?
We need “warriors”. We need people whose primary goal is to be proactive in the evolution of the industry toward more efficient, cleaner and ultra-quiet technologies. For this, we are looking for personalities with a strong freedom of spirit, a bit of rebellion and a great capacity to be a force of proposal on subjects both technical and marketing.
