TEAM

The SiyaHamba team is based at the Physics Department in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Durban University of Technology. It assists SMEs and industrial clients in research and development and the prototyping of innovative products, energy auditing and measurement and verification of implemented energy saving initiatives within the energy sector. The team conducts research in various energy focus areas, including the use of hydrogen in alternative transport such as water bound crafts. Preparing for the MEBC provides training and engagement opportunities for local and industrial communities. The team consists of honours, master students and university interns.

Project

This year represents DUT’s first ever attempt with hydrogen technology at a competitive level. The institute has not done this type of applied research before and will make use of the opportunity to expand its research and development capabilities. This water vessel will make use of the H2Sys range extender unit, supplied by hydrogen gas via supplied cylinders. The units’ DC/DC converter will be included to interact with the power management unit and the motor. The objective is to place emphasis on the design of the overall construction and look of the boat, taking aerodynamics and hydrodynamics into account.
